The Intensive English Program
The Intensive English
Program is an academic preparation course designed to help international
students make the transition to American academic life in a relatively
short time through full-time non-credit instruction in English as a
second language.
The academic focus of the Intensive English Program prepares students
for the TOEFL examination. Students are tested prior to the first day of
class. Based on test results, each student is placed in one of six
levels of study.
In each level, students receive grades for written examinations, oral
presentations, class participation, and out-of-class work. After
completing Level 6, most of our students are ready to pass the TOEFL and
enter American universities or professional schools.

The Intensive Conversation
Program
The Intensive Conversation Program is a
non-academic immersion program in English conversation. During this
practical 3/4-week course, students will talk, talk, and talk in English
all day. If you want English conversation only, this is the program for
you.
Students are tested prior to the first day of class to evaluate speaking
and listening skills, then placed in one of three levels of study:
beginning, intermediate, or advanced.
The program includes:
Extensive conversational practice
Small classes of 10 to 15 students to ensure full student participation
Language laboratory instruction
Daily lunch with teachers during which only English is spoken
Educational field trips and excursions during which only English is
spoken

The Business English Program
The Business English Program is a 6-week
full-time academic course for high-intermediate to advanced students of
English with an emphasis on business. The program's primary focus is on
communicating more proficiently in the business community.
This comprehensive course encompasses all the aspects of English in a
business setting, including reading, writing, and speaking English
effectively. During the course, students will have the opportunity to
interact in simulated business situations and to perform various
professional tasks. Upon completion, students will receive a Business
English Certificate of Completion.
Instructors are experienced professionals in the academic as well as the
business world, and they bring their dynamic and unique style of
teaching to the program. Many have studied other languages and have
lived or worked abroad, thus having an understanding of cultural
differences.
Class sizes are kept small (10-15 students) in order for instructors to
give students individual attention.

The Summer Institute
ELI's four-week Summer Institute
integrated program of grammar and conversation allows students to
study English in a semi-academic setting at all levels of proficiency.
TOEFL preparation classes are available through the Institute for
high-intermediate to advanced students.
Students are tested on the first day of
class, then placed in one of six levels of study, from beginning
through advanced. Summer Institute classes meet Monday through
Thursday, from 9:00 am to 12:00 PM, allowing students to have the
afternoon free to study and explore the city of Miami. Fridays are
also free for students to travel around our beautiful state.
Integrated Grammar / Conversation
Course
In small classes of 10-15, students will:
- Improve conversation through structured practice
- Learn practical American idioms
- Increase active/passive vocabulary
- Participate in class discussions
- Improve listening comprehension
- Build grammar skills
TOEFL Preparation Course
This course is designed for high-intermediate to advanced students who
need to take the TOEFL test for admission to American universities or
for professional advancement.
In small classes of 10-15, students will:
- Improve their listening comprehension
- Learn the important points in the Structure and Written
Expression section
- Increase their reading efficiency and build their vocabulary
- Sharpen their test taking skills
- Take practice tests under real test-taking conditions
* No course can guarantee that you will pass a standardized test. Only
you can pass the tests through your own efforts.

The Practical
Conversation Program
The Practical Conversation Program is a non-academic program in

IMPORTANT: This short-term course does not include University ID
privileges.
No I-20s will be issued for this program unless students plan to
continue their English studies at the English Language Institute.

Language Institute offers the Institutional TOEFL in order to
better serve the needs of our international students and community
at large. The testing fee is
$45.00. We accept money orders, and cashiers
checks (payable to FIU), Visa, Master Card, American Express, and
Discover only. SORRY, WE DO NOT ACCEPT CASH OR PERSONAL CHECKS IN
THIS OFFICE. This is a non-refundable, non-transferable

Academic English Program*
The Academic English Program is designed for those
individuals in our community who work during the day and need a more
intensive program than those currently available. This program
prepares students for the TOEFL and admission to an American
university or professional school.
The Academic English
Program features classes in grammar, conversation, and reading/writing
along with guided independent laboratory work. This program is open to
students at all levels of proficiency.
I-20s will be issued for the Academic
English Program. The cost for this course for International students
will be $1900.00 and for Legal Aliens $1500.00.

Business English Program*
The Business English Program is designed for those
individuals who need to improve their oral and written skills in order
to communicate more proficiently in the business community.
The Business English
Program is offered every semester and features two courses: Business
Writing and Public Speaking. This program is open to high-intermediate
and advanced students only.

Conversational English
Program*
On the basis of a series of placement tests,
each student is assigned to one of six levels of study. Our goals is
to provide an oral, grammatically-based program for adult learners of
English as a second language. Our six levels incorporate grammar,
conversation, listening comprehension and pronunciation. The CEP
students receive 5 to 6 hours of classroom instruction per week plus
unlimited use of the supervised language laboratory. Classes are
small, and up-to-date textbooks and materials are used. This programs
is open to students at all levels of proficiency.
CEP instructors
are outstanding specialists with Master's degrees in teaching English
as a Second Language or related fields and extensive experience. They
are dynamic and versatile professionals who bring warmth, humor an
cultural awareness into their classes.
The COP incorporates the use of two types of
laboratories in the curriculum: the audio facility and the video lab.
Our program has the most modern materials, as we continually review
and update our resources.
